Baba Amte left his comfortable life as a wealthy Hindu lawyer to follow a personal calling, to develop modern communities to help those with Hanson's Disease (leprosy) and other so-called untouchables of his native India. By building and funding hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, a bank, library, post office, and cooperative shops, his community brings employment, education, health, and other services to citizens long denied dignity and compassion.

Peace Award:
Peace Award for Dalai Lama

The 1999 'International Award for Peace and Harmony' was conferred to His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the Nehru Centre, Worli in Mumbai. The award which carries Rupees three lacs, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has donated...the remaining Rs. 100,000 to Baba Amte's projects. Deciding to give the last Rs.100,000 to Baba Amte, His Holiness said, "He (Baba Amte) recently won the Gandhi Peace Award. I've no award to give him, but I would like to give him this."
